In a whimsical twist on cybersecurity, engineer Mark El-Khoury recently unveiled a version of the popular password recovery tool, Hashcat, running on the venerable Nintendo Game Boy Advance. This unique adaptation, dubbed GBA-Hashcat, emerged from the developer's creative application of the Butano engine, enabling C++ programming for the 21-year-old handheld console. However, the GBA's modest 16.78 MHz ARM7TDMI chip manages a mere 727 SHA256 hashes per second. This processing speed pales in comparison to modern cracking rigs, which can perform the same task approximately thirty million times faster, converting what would take the GBA 350 days into a mere second on a contemporary GPU-accelerated system. El-Khoury, who humorously describes the project as both “the greatest password cracking of all time” and his “dumbest app of all time,” further joked about enhancing its speed by porting it to a Lua subset used in World of Warcraft addons. This playful exploration into retro computing underscores a broader trend among developers. For instance, in April, a modder ingeniously miniaturized a Game Boy Color into a smartwatch, featuring a rather unconventional control scheme. Following this, another independent developer crafted an E-Ink Game Boy emulator using an e-reader, achieving a surprisingly playable refresh rate suitable for nostalgic replays of titles like Pokémon Blue.
