UM Grizzly Esports Claims First National Title

05/28/2025

A University of Montana esports team has made history by clinching their first national championship. Competing in League of Legends, a strategic multiplayer game with over 120 million monthly users, the five-member squad triumphed in the National Esports Collegiate Conference. Their journey to victory was marked by an undefeated regular season and playoffs within the NECC West Conference. Teamwork, leadership, and adaptability were key factors in their success, demonstrating the essence of true teamwork. The program emphasizes academic support and community engagement while fostering growth among its players.

Championship Triumph Through Team Cohesion

The UM esports team showcased remarkable unity and collaboration en route to their national title. Led by senior Dean Klakken III, the group focused on leveraging individual strengths and compensating for weaknesses through strategic gameplay. This synergy allowed them to dominate both during the regular season and in playoff matches. Despite limited practice time, their dedication to communication and mutual encouragement set them apart from competitors.

Team captain Klakken emphasized that success stemmed from prioritizing collective improvement over individual accolades. By concentrating on effective communication rather than minor tactical plays, they built a resilient dynamic capable of overcoming challenges. Their brief yet intense preparation involved analyzing gameplay videos and practicing individually on ranked ladders. Such efforts cultivated a cohesive unit ready to conquer adversaries in virtual arenas streamed live via UM's Twitch channel.

Growth-Oriented Environment Fosters Success

Grizzly Esports, established in 2019, offers a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and competitively. With 120 active members participating across various gaming competitions, the organization fosters camaraderie and resilience among participants. Assistant director Cale Patenaude highlights how emphasizing player development leads naturally to victories like this championship win without undue pressure on competitiveness alone.

Beyond gaming achievements, Grizzly Esports contributes positively to society through fundraising initiatives benefiting causes such as Can the Cats and Extra Life. Additionally, annual scholarships totaling $50,000 support fifty UM students financially at all levels of study. This holistic approach ensures sustained progress within the program while celebrating milestones achieved through hard work and dedication. Patenaude expresses pride in realizing tangible results reflective of their commitment to building strong communities around esports culture.
