Subnautica 2's Early Access Launch Pushed to 2026, Sparking Controversy Over Missed Developer Bonuses
A recent report reveals that Krafton, the publisher behind Subnautica 2, has postponed the game's early access release to 2026. This decision comes shortly before Unknown Worlds, the studio developing Subnautica 2, was set to receive a significant $250 million bonus contingent on the game's launch in 2025. This move follows a shake-up in Unknown Worlds' leadership, with the removal of key figures including designer Charlie Cleveland, CEO Ted Gill, and co-founder Max McGuire.
\nThe core of the issue lies in the financial agreement established when Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds in 2021. The $250 million bonus was tied to specific revenue targets that were achievable with a 2025 release. The delay into 2026 effectively jeopardizes the studio's ability to meet these targets, thereby negating the bonus. Adding to the controversy, the ousted leadership reportedly intended to distribute this bonus among all 100 employees, with individual payouts potentially reaching hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. New CEO Steve Papoutsis, formerly of Krafton's Striking Distance Studios, has stated that the delay is to allow for additional content, despite former co-founder Cleveland asserting the game was ready for early access. Papoutsis denies any knowledge of the bonus agreement impacting the delay.
\nThis situation highlights the complex financial pressures and corporate decisions that can impact game development and the well-being of creative teams. The future of Subnautica 2 and its development team remains uncertain, with the game's Steam page still listing a 2025 early access release date. This incident underscores the importance of transparency and ethical considerations in the relationship between publishers and developers, particularly when significant financial incentives and the livelihoods of employees are at stake. It serves as a reminder that the pursuit of excellence in game development should always be balanced with fair and transparent dealings.
