Sony's Controversial Decisions: Fan Projects, Studio Closures, and the Elusive Bloodborne Remake

02/25/2026

Recent events have sparked considerable debate within the gaming community, as Sony faces scrutiny for its stringent stance on fan-made projects and its decision to shutter a renowned remake studio. This comes amidst persistent calls for a remaster or remake of the critically acclaimed title, Bloodborne, which remains exclusive to PlayStation 4.

In November 2024, independent developer Maxime Foulquier unveiled his fan project, "Bloodborne Top Down Arena," a creative fusion of the gothic aesthetics of FromSoftware's Bloodborne with the engaging mechanics of Vampire Survivors. The project garnered attention for its innovative concept, albeit its visual resemblance to the original game. Foulquier's work, however, was abruptly halted in March 2025 when he received a cease and desist letter from Sony's legal representatives, demanding the termination of his project. Instead of immediately disclosing the unfortunate news, Foulquier opted to bide his time, intending to refashion his assets into an original game inspired by the Bloodborne universe.

Foulquier's decision to reveal the cease and desist letter coincided with the confirmation of Bluepoint Games' closure by Sony. Bluepoint, a studio celebrated for its exceptional remakes of titles like "Demon's Souls" and "Shadow of the Colossus," had long been the subject of speculation within the Bloodborne community. Many fans held onto the hope that Bluepoint would eventually undertake a remake or remaster of Bloodborne, a dream now dashed by the studio's disbandment. This sentiment was echoed by Foulquier, who initially harbored hopes that Sony's intervention meant an official Bloodborne remake, potentially led by Bluepoint for the PlayStation 6, was in the works. The reality, however, proved to be a profound disappointment for both Foulquier and the broader fan base.

This incident is not an isolated one. Previously, another fan-made project, "Bloodborne Kart," a kart racing game set in the Yharnam universe, also faced legal action from Sony, ultimately leading to its rebranding as "Nightmare Kart." These repeated actions have fueled frustration among players, leading Foulquier to openly question Sony's perplexing decisions: why dismantle a talented studio and stifle passionate fan initiatives, especially when an official remake of a highly cherished game remains absent?

As the community continues to grapple with these developments, the yearning for a modern rendition of Bloodborne persists. While an official announcement from Sony remains elusive, the advancements in Bloodborne PC emulation offer a glimmer of hope, making the beloved title more accessible on various platforms, including the Steam Deck.
