Micron Unveils High-Performance PCIe Gen5 QLC SSD, Signaling Return to Consumer Market

01/07/2026

Amidst a challenging period for SSD pricing, Micron has introduced an innovative storage solution, defying earlier expectations about its focus on consumer memory. This new development hints at a potential shift towards more budget-friendly yet high-performing storage options for the general public.

The recently launched Micron 3610 NVMe SSD is heralded as the inaugural PCIe Gen5 QLC client SSD, powered by the company's G9 NAND technology. This introduction signals Micron's renewed commitment to the consumer sector, indicating a strategic move to address the demand for advanced storage at accessible prices. Historically, QLC technology has been viewed with skepticism regarding its performance and reliability, but recent advancements, such as SK Hynix's 321-layer QLC flash memory, demonstrate significant improvements in transfer speeds and write performance. These enhancements suggest that increased NAND density will ultimately lead to more affordable SSDs.

The Micron 3610 NVMe SSD lives up to expectations in terms of speed, offering sequential read speeds of up to 11 GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.3 GB/s. Designed for energy efficiency, the drive reportedly improves performance per watt by up to 43%. While it serves as an excellent gaming drive, Micron is particularly keen on highlighting its capabilities for managing demanding AI tasks. The SSD can load 20-billion parameter AI models in under three seconds, providing real-time AI insights for mainstream devices. Available in various M.2 form factors and capacities up to 4 TB, the 1 TB model offers slightly lower sequential write speeds, but still delivers ample performance for most applications. This emphasis on AI integration reflects a broader industry trend, even as some manufacturers note a lack of consumer enthusiasm specifically for AI features.

This innovative stride by Micron, marrying advanced QLC technology with PCIe Gen5 speeds, is poised to democratize access to high-speed storage. By focusing on both performance and affordability, the company empowers users to embrace future-forward applications, from immersive gaming to sophisticated artificial intelligence workloads, fostering a more capable and accessible technological landscape.
