Leadership Changes at CI Games Ahead of Lords of the Fallen 2 Launch
The gaming world is buzzing with news from CI Games regarding its upcoming title, 'Lords of the Fallen 2', following its recent reveal at Gamescom's Opening Night Live. This sequel builds upon the 2023 soulslike hit, which itself was a reinterpretation of the 2014 original. Yet, the anticipation for this new release is overshadowed by a series of significant personnel departures from the development team. Notably, the creative director, art director, and executive producer of the critically acclaimed 2023 'Lords of the Fallen' have all left the studio, raising questions about the creative vision and the path forward for the franchise under new leadership.
Former creative director Cezar Virtosu expressed a profound sense of loss on social media, describing his departure as a 'surreal feeling' and lamenting the separation from the 'Lords of the Fallen' universe he had been deeply immersed in for five years. He reflected on the project as an extension of himself, concluding that, like the fictional realm of Mournstead, no kingdom endures indefinitely. This sentiment highlights the personal investment and passion these individuals poured into the game's development.
Adding to the shake-up, executive producer Saul Gascon and art director Alexandre Chaudret also departed the company. Their exits follow a public dispute, where CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski criticized Gascon's supposed intention to halt game support earlier than planned, contrasting it with the ongoing development of the 'LotF 2.0' update. Neither Gascon nor the other departed developers have publicly commented on the reasons for their leaving, suggesting a confidentiality agreement is in place.
In response to these changes, CI Games has brought in new talent to spearhead 'Lords of the Fallen 2'. Nathan Richardsson, with a background in various notable game studios, has been appointed as the senior development director for this title and another unannounced project. Additionally, James Lowe, previously an art director at Deck13 and Fishlabs, has taken on the role of game director for 'Lords of the Fallen 2'. Lowe has hinted at a more aggressive and intense direction for the sequel, promising it to be 'bolder, braver, and bloodier.'
The current developments echo past turbulences in the 'Lords of the Fallen' franchise. The 2023 iteration itself saw a tumultuous development cycle, shifting hands from Deck13 to Defiant Studios, and finally to Hexworks, under the guidance of Gascon and Virtosu. Despite these hurdles, Hexworks managed to deliver a well-received game. However, with Hexworks now absorbed into CI Games and its key leaders gone, the future of the franchise remains a subject of considerable speculation.
The company's CEO, Marek Tyminski, has also drawn attention for his outspoken 'zero woke' policy, which included altering character creation options in the 2023 game to explicitly categorize body types as 'male' or 'female.' Tyminski has asserted the company's commitment to keeping its games free from social and political agendas, despite criticism that such alterations are themselves politically motivated. This ongoing narrative, combined with the leadership changes and the game's ambitious 2026 release target, sets a complex stage for the highly anticipated 'Lords of the Fallen 2', which has evidently been in development for some time under the now-departed creative team.
