Highguard's Final Update Brings New Character, Skill Trees Amidst Impending Shutdown
In an unexpected development for the gaming community, Highguard, a first-person shooter title, is scheduled for permanent shutdown on March 12th. Despite its imminent closure, the game has just received a significant content update, a testament to the dedication of its development team.
This final release introduces Koldo, an innovative healer Warden capable of deploying a 'Soul Shield' for team protection and a 'Battle Cry' ultimate ability that creates a mobile health-regenerating dome. Players can also get their hands on the new Switchback weapon, which seamlessly transforms between a shotgun for close-quarters combat and a precise marksman rifle for long-range engagements. Furthermore, the update brings a comprehensive skill tree system and player progression, allowing enthusiasts to customize their gameplay through four distinct specialties: Raider, Harvester, Treasure Hunter, and Protector. With a level cap of 100, players can earn up to 44 skill points, offering a meaningful way to engage with the game in its last days. According to Jason McCord, the creative director at Wildlight Entertainment, the team diligently worked to finalize these features, even though many were initially planned for future seasonal updates.
Highguard's journey, though brief, saw over two million players participate, with an average of 3.48 games played per session. The majority of its player base resided on PS5. This bittersweet update serves as a final, heartfelt gesture from the developers to their community, emphasizing that even in the face of cessation, the spirit of creation and dedication can prevail, leaving a lasting impression on those who cherished the game.
