Exploring the Joys of Gaming with a New Controller

05/29/2025

Growing up without a gaming console led me to embrace PC gaming, where productivity tools transformed into gaming platforms. Despite my preference for mouse and keyboard, I ventured into console-style gaming with the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro controller. This journey explored whether handheld gaming could replace traditional setups, especially for specific genres.

Through trials with various game types, including RTS, 4X, FPS, and casual games, I discovered limitations and unexpected pleasures. While certain titles resisted controller integration, others flourished under its ergonomic advantages, offering a fresh perspective on leisure gaming.

Challenges in Genre Adaptation

Despite enthusiasm for strategic and tactical games, the transition to controller-based gameplay revealed significant obstacles. Titles like Red Alert 2 and Civilization VI lack native support for controllers on PC, rendering them incompatible. Additionally, first-person shooters proved difficult due to aiming challenges, as the physical mechanics differ from mouse-based precision.

Real-time strategy (RTS) and 4X games demand intricate control schemes that traditional controllers struggle to replicate. In Company of Heroes 3, the controller failed to register, leaving only mouse and keyboard options viable. Similarly, Civilization VI did not recognize the controller setup, necessitating complex workarounds that detracted from enjoyment. First-person shooter experiences were equally frustrating, as precise aiming became cumbersome with thumbstick controls. Even though quick actions were accessible, the shift from full-hand movement to thumb-based adjustments hindered performance significantly.

Ergonomic Comfort in Leisure Gaming

While strategic and action-oriented games posed challenges, casual and slow-paced titles excelled with the new controller setup. Games such as American Truck Simulator and Dorfromantik benefited greatly from the ergonomic advantages offered by the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro. These settings provided comfort and accuracy, enhancing overall gameplay experience.

American Truck Simulator showcased how controller mapping could transform gameplay dynamics, making long deliveries more comfortable and manageable. The ability to modulate acceleration and braking mirrored real-life driving experiences, adding an extra layer of immersion. Furthermore, playing Dorfromantik on the TV via Steam Link introduced a newfound relaxation method, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. This exploration highlighted that while console-style gaming might not replace traditional preferences entirely, it certainly complements them by offering versatile and convenient alternatives for leisurely sessions.
