Cities: Skylines 2 "Bridges and Ports" Expansion Arrives October 29
After a series of postponements, the much-anticipated “Bridges and Ports” add-on for the urban planning simulation game Cities: Skylines 2 is now slated for release on October 29. This expansion is crucial for the game's future, as it aims to address player criticisms and boost its currently mixed reception. Accompanying this release is the “Cold Wave Channel” radio station, offering players an alternative musical experience.
Detailed Report: Cities: Skylines 2 Gears Up for Major Expansion Release
Two years following its initial launch, and over a year past its originally scheduled debut, the extensive “Bridges and Ports” downloadable content for Cities: Skylines 2 is finally nearing completion. Today, the development studio Colossal Order and its publisher Paradox Interactive confirmed that this significant expansion, which has faced two previous delays, will become available on October 29. The initial plan was for this DLC to arrive in mid-2024, shortly after the “Beach Properties” asset pack. However, the troubled launch of “Beach Properties” led Paradox to offer it for free, shifting focus to the core game's stability and pushing the “Bridges and Ports” release first to the second quarter of 2025, and then to late 2025, due to persistent issues across the game.
However, it appears these challenges have been sufficiently resolved for the expansion to proceed. The “Bridges and Ports” package will introduce 20 new types of drawbridges and lift bridges, along with fully customizable port facilities. It also features a new Ferry Transport System, enhanced maritime industries such as fishing and offshore oil rigs, three additional maps, more than one hundred new in-game items, and a suite of new achievements for players to unlock. Priced at $20/£17/€20, the expansion will launch alongside the “Cold Wave Channel” radio station, which offers “minimalist beats and icy vibes.” This radio station can be purchased separately for $5/£4.49/€5 or bundled with the expansion for $22.49/£18.89/€22.49.
This launch is critical for Colossal Order and Paradox. Cities: Skylines 2 has struggled to maintain a positive reputation, currently holding a “mixed” rating on Steam with just over half of user reviews being favorable. Its player count also lags behind that of its decade-old predecessor, Cities: Skylines. The community's reaction on Steam to the latest release date announcement is largely dominated by ongoing complaints about the game’s overall state. Therefore, the success of “Bridges and Ports” is paramount; another underperforming release could severely damage player trust and the game’s long-term viability.
The protracted development and numerous delays of the “Bridges and Ports” expansion for Cities: Skylines 2 highlight the significant challenges game developers face in balancing ambitious content releases with player expectations and game stability. This situation serves as a poignant reminder that while new features are exciting, a solid, bug-free foundation is paramount for long-term player engagement and the success of any title. For players, it underscores the importance of patience, but also the need for developers to be transparent and responsive to community feedback to rebuild trust. The upcoming launch will be a true test of whether the development team has learned from past missteps and can deliver a polished experience that rekindles enthusiasm for the city-building franchise.
